Notes

This limited edition (2,000 copies worldwide) 7 inch single was released to celebrate Record Store Day on Saturday 19 April 2014 available exclusively from participating stores only. Packaged in its own picture sleeve the A-side is the very rare and highly collectable band version of John’s much loved song May You Never, originally released as a single in November 1971 (see discography entry) and on the B-side there is an alternate take of May You Never that features ex-Free guitarist Paul Kossoff on guitar, previously unavailable on vinyl!

Universal Music Press Release – “May You Never, from John Martyn’s seminal 1973 album Solid Air, is perhaps his most well-known song. However, that version is very different from the first recording made in September 1971 with a full band and released as a single on the Island Records label in November 1971 (WIP6116). Free guitarist Paul Kossoff was both a friend and a fan, and took part in the studio sessions at Basing Street Studios. Kossoff had a poster of Martyn on his wall; the same poster, in fact, that some 40 years later was used as the cover art for the incredible 18 disc The Island Years box set. Although intended as a John Martyn session to record his single it also resulted in Kossoff’s classic, 38-minute long Time Away. The original May You Never single is extremely hard to find and to celebrate Record Store Day 2014 it has been exclusively released again with a similarly rare alternate take recorded with Paul Kossoff on the B-side and a new picture sleeve featuring photography by Geoff Allan.”
