John was playing on his own at the ABC Theatre in Hull, circa 1977, and asked the front row of the audience for a plectrum each time he needed a joke. John played a ‘set of two halves’ at the Mean Fiddler, London, summer 1999. John came on acting a little wobbly and was nursed through the first half by his very able keyboards man. In the second half he was sensational.
